THE INHERENT BEAUTY IN A FAILED ATTEMPT TO RECONSTRUCT

Is time’s arrow just a means to human perception?

We perceive our physical surroundings in a series of moments where the future is possible and varied but the past is locked and cannot be revisited. Within the world of mathematics, it is just as easy to roll back time as it is to move it forward. Is space-time an allusion, a tool of human understanding allowing for movement and cognition of the universe?

We now live in a world of media. People live forever in reflections of themselves, endlessly presenting and replaying the best events again and again. We have lost our hold on the specific moments in which we live and spend much of our time watching media.  Are live events live, or just media production opportunities?

Is our perception of time by design? Forcing our perception to pay attention to the specifics of the moment instead of being lost in the sea of the past or future? If we could see the past and future clearly as the present what would we do?

Humanity has been slowly eroding the power of time to hide the past. This happened first with language, then with the written word, and now, after progressing through mathematics, to media, modern technologies, and sciences.

This sculpture is made possible by connecting the porcelain pieces to a computer via a system of motors and armatures. Documentation of the break was analyzed and turned into computer code. Like rewinding videotape, the sculpture is able to rewind the physical motion of the breaking of the cup again and again.
